When doing everything right was no longer enough
She was a strong performer: dependable, capable, and trusted with difficult work.
But she wanted the next role, and the usual formula — work harder, know more, deliver more — was no longer enough.
The useful question became:
“If I already had the next role, how would I be operating differently today?”
That shifted the focus.
She began noticing how often she still solved things personally, relied on expertise for confidence, and waited for good work to speak for itself.
The next level seemed to require something different: shaping direction, building sponsorship, creating leverage through others, and operating with a wider perspective.
Promotion stopped being only something the organisation would eventually decide.
It became a way of practising leadership before the title arrived.
Sometimes the qualities that create our success are also the ones we eventually have to outgrow.
