When the question isn't really “Should I do this?”
He was facing an important personal decision about whether to enter a committed relationship again. There were several familiar options. But comparing them was not helping. The useful shift came from asking:
“What kind of life do you want to build?”
That changed everything. He began speaking about companionship, being witnessed, mutual support, love — and also about the parts of his identity and values he did not want either person to surrender. Once the desired life became clearer, the relationship question changed. Instead of asking which available model he should fit into, he could ask:
“What kind of relationship would belong inside the life I want?”
There was no neat answer. But there was a better question. And sometimes that is the breakthrough.
